“I love celebrating my Mexican American culture. I love highlighting the colors, the ideas, the sense of community and family that we don’t always see. And I want people to feel empowered by it.” – Yocelyn Riojas
In partnership with Amplifier and Facebook Open Arts, I was offered the opportunity to design a large-scale mural to encourage hesistant vaccine communities to reconsider. My motivation behind this piece was the idea of being able to reunite with family again for a gathering especially during the holidays. My favorite time of year is when we get to make tamales together and I thought others would be able to resonate with it. It’s important to think about our families and protect our elders and youth.
The mural is featured in San Antonio, Texas, and Mesa, Arizona which is one of the 12 artworks commissioned across North America. This artwork’s purpose is to uplift vaccines in my community and to celebrate the beauty of my heritage and culture.
